About the Class

Early parenthood can be joyful and overwhelming all at once. This drop-in class draws on the Mindful with your Baby program (an 8 week program based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction group) to help you tune in to your baby, build mindfulness skills, and connect with other parents in a warm and supported environment.

Each session includes:

  • Mindfulness and relaxation practices for parents

  • Guided observation of your baby's cues and communication

  • Mindful parenting practice information

  • Time for connection and sharing with other new parents

You and your baby are welcome to join no matter where you are at in your day — sleeping, feeding, in need of settling, all is completely fine.

Why babies in the room?

Having your baby present is central to how this program works. While babies can sometimes be distracting or unsettled, their presence creates rich learning opportunities. Stressful moments with your baby may arise during sessions — and that's actually a gift, because it gives you the chance to practise mindfulness skills on the spot, with the support of Kate right there with you.

Parents often find that learning mindfulness alongside their baby makes the skills much easier to carry into everyday life.

Common concerns about attending

When we have run this class in the past, parents have told us about a few things that gave them pause. Here's what we'd like you to know:

  • The class runs from 10am–12pm, and we know there is no perfect time for a group that includes babies aged 0–12 months. Our experience suggests that unless your baby has only one nap per day, there is usually some flexibility in the length and setting of naps. There is also space in the room for prams, if your baby sleeps well in one. If nap timing is a concern, please reach out to Kate or Samantha — we are happy to troubleshoot with you.

  • Parents are encouraged to feed their babies during the group, including during meditations. We believe that responsiveness is at the heart of healthy parent–child relationships, and feeding your baby is always welcome.

  • Many parents worry that their baby will be particularly unsettled or cry frequently, and that this will disturb others or make it hard to concentrate. Please know that babies cry during this class — and we see that as completely normal and genuinely useful. It is one of the ways the group gives you a real opportunity to practise what we are learning together.

And just like your baby, you are welcome here on all kinds of days. We know that early parenthood brings its own waves of emotion, and you don't need to arrive with everything together. We are here to meet you wherever you are at.

GP referrals and Medicare rebates

You do not need a referral to attend — you are welcome to join as a self-referral and pay the session fee directly.

If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on sessions. To access this:

  • Ask your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan with a referral specifically for group therapy

  • Email your referral prior to your class, we will need to get some extra details from you so that we can then process the Medicare rebate on your behalf.
